About Us
1 in 3 people have uncorrected vision and 90% of them live in the “bottom of the pyramid” or developing countries, where there is little access to vision care or they are unaware that they have poor vision. But in fact, they can be said to be experiencing something in vain, because 80% of vision problems are preventable or curable with solutions available today. Uncorrected vision problems are also a burden on the global economy. Lost productivity due to poor vision costs countries US$272B per year.
At Essilor, we believe that good vision is a human right. Good vision can improve lives in everything from health, education and employment opportunities to the sustainability of local communities and economies.
Our mission is to improve lives by improving vision. In 2012, we set our ambition to eliminate low vision in every generation, focusing on serving the 2.7 billion people with uncorrected vision loss. We focus on three areas: business inclusion, philanthropic strategy, vision awareness, and advocacy.
In 2019, we published a report titled “Eliminating Poor Vision in a Generation: What needs to be done to end poor vision by 2050?”, an evidence-based mapping that defines the global scale of poor vision and outlines solutions to eliminate the problem within a generation.
Our ambitions and targets, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, drive us and enable us to continually measure our progress.
